Google Merchant Center flags Image too small when a product's image is below the size Google needs for an ad or free listing, and disapproves those products (Google Merchant Center Help, How to fix: Image too small). As of October 2026 the minimum is 100 x 100 pixels, or 250 x 250 for apparel, but Google will require at least 500 x 500 pixels for all product images from 31 January 2027. Replace small images now with larger originals, not scaled-up thumbnails.

Google's image size requirements

Google's minimums, as of October 2026 (Google Merchant Center Help, How to fix: Image too small):

Products Minimum size
Apparel 250 x 250 px
All other products 100 x 100 px
YouTube Shopping ads served on TV 500 x 500 px

For every image, the maximum is 64 megapixels and a 16 MB file (same source).

The 500 x 500 rule from 31 January 2027

Google is moving to a minimum of 500 x 500 pixels for all product images, with enforcement beginning 31 January 2027. Since July 2026, Merchant Center shows warnings on images that meet today's minimums but are smaller than 500 x 500; until 31 January 2027 the current minimums still apply (Google Merchant Center Help, How to fix: Image too small). Google's image link page already lists 500 x 500 pixels as the requirement and recommends 1500 x 1500 pixels or above for best performance (Google Merchant Center Help, Image link [image_link]).

To find products that will be affected, open View history on the Needs attention tab and look for the warning Image too small for upcoming enforcement (Google Merchant Center Help, How to fix: Image too small).

How to fix small images

  1. Use a larger original. Google recommends that the product fills about 75% to 90% of the frame and warns against thumbnails and scaled-up images (Google Merchant Center Help, How to fix: Image too small).
  2. Update the products. For a few products, open Products > Needs attention, select Edit product, replace the image and select Save. For many, download the .csv list of affected products, point each product's image_link at the updated image, and upload the corrected data (same source).
  3. Wait for the update. Changes may take 24–72 hours to show on the Needs attention page (same source). When you replace an image, use a new URL: a new image at an unchanged URL can take up to 6 weeks to show (Google Merchant Center Help, How to fix: Unable to show image).

Google also mentions Product Studio in Merchant Center, which can increase image resolution, among other edits (Google Merchant Center Help, How to fix: Image too small).

When the feed sends thumbnails

Many stores generate several sizes of every image, and some exports or plugins send a small size to the feed. If the full-size file sits at a URL that differs only by a size suffix, you don't need to edit products one by one: in Product Feed Master a replace transformation rule on the image_link mapping can rewrite the URL to the full-size file on every sync. Check a few rewritten URLs in a browser before publishing, since a URL that returns an error causes a missing image issue instead (missing product image).
